The 14th of December 1997 was a turning point for me. I decided to breakaway from an established partnership in a printing company and start up Print Solutions.
Originally set up as a Print Finishers, Print Solutions quickly established itself in bindery and die cutting services and we found ourselves in a very vibrant trade market.
In 2004 we had the opportunity to move from our Bretton site to Woodston, an equally thriving part of Peterborough. The advantages being that the new premises were bigger and the location was closer to the A1 / A14 giving us greater access to London, Birmingham and Leicester.
2007 saw the start of the Banking crash, a difficult time for many, the printing industry was no exception. With the internet also changing how people communicated, the demand for print and printed marketing materials was firmly on the decline. Our trade clients, good people, many of whom ran great companies were struggling, some taking that moment to retire from the industry, others sold out or just went bust. We needed a plan to survive.
A new business plan was discussed, one which involved our remaining trade clients as well as a new direct to consumer approach. I took time to meet individuals in the industry and circulate via networking events, with a view to gain valuable information as to what services were working in the trade, what products were selling, and what sort of client was evolving in this ‘New Tech Age’.
I took advice from some dear colleagues I knew in the industry, one or two in particular (you know who you are) who were instrumental in encouraging me to think differently.
With changes imminent, we completely overhauled our website, focused on our strengths and brought new channels to market. Concentrating on our three main areas Printing, Garments and Signage , Print Solutions has completely reinvented itself.
A lot has happened to us in 21 years. Our plans moving forward may be judged by some as ambitious, but we have always been a team that have embraced change in our industry. Proudly winning 2 national print awards in 2014 and 2017 for innovation proves that. Our continued involvement with National print organisations like the IPIA and Stationers Company keeps us informed with the latest industry thinking.
Looking forward: We continue to enjoy producing amazing work for our clients, and strive for excellence in everything we undertake.
With our services now including: shop signage, vehicle livery, personalised, embroidered/printed apparel, merchandise, exhibition graphics and displays alongside our existing trade print finishing services. The services we are providing have evolved, following our clients needs; to become a one-stop-shop for all things print, which was the ambitious new mission statement we created back in 2012. After 6 years, we and our clients feel, this is exactly who we are.
We have a terrific experienced team of dedicated staff, who work hard to produce top quality products and services.
The company works closely with local community projects through it’s local support scheme and we will continue to do this in the future.
I hope to continue with the work I do voluntarily for The Printing Charity and (where I can) help young people coming into the industry, through their ‘Print Futures Awards Scheme’.
A lot has happened in 21 years, if looking back is anything to go by the next 21 will be a very interesting ride!
